UNDERSTAND THE COMPLETE FLOW

Connect design decisions to implementation.

Physical design turns a gate-level netlist into a manufacturable chip layout. This course covers the stages of that flow and the timing, congestion and verification decisions involved.

Learn the fundamentals

Understand design inputs, libraries, constraints and the purpose of each implementation stage.

Work through the flow

Follow floorplanning, placement, clock tree synthesis and routing, with analysis at each stage.

Explain your decisions

Develop the vocabulary to discuss timing closure, engineering changes and signoff checks.

THE PUBLISHED CURRICULUM

Physical Design syllabus, module by module.

Review the topics below, then discuss the batch timetable, practical work and tool access with admissions.

01

Physical design fundamentals

Where physical design sits between synthesis and tape-out, inputs and outputs (netlist, constraints, libraries, technology files) and the structure of a block-level flow.

02

Floorplanning and power planning

Die and core sizing, macro and I/O placement, aspect ratio and utilisation, power rings, stripes and rails, and early IR drop checks.

03

Placement and optimisation

Standard-cell placement, congestion analysis, timing-driven placement, buffering and sizing, and legalisation.

04

Clock tree synthesis (CTS)

Clock tree goals, skew, latency and insertion delay, clock buffers and inverters, useful skew and clock gating considerations.

05

Routing

Global and detailed routing, layer assignment, design rule fixing, antenna and via handling, and routing congestion.

06

Static timing analysis and timing closure

Setup and hold analysis, constraints and exceptions, multi-corner multi-mode (MCMM) analysis, and closing violations step by step.

07

Signal integrity and power integrity

Crosstalk, noise, IR drop and electromigration, and how fixes feed back into the flow.

08

Low-power physical design

Multi-voltage domains, power gating, isolation cells and level shifters, and UPF intent in the layout flow. See our guide to isolation cells.

09

Physical verification and signoff

DRC, LVS and antenna checks, ECOs, final timing signoff and database hand-off for tape-out.

10

Block-level project

End-to-end project from netlist to a routed, timing-clean block, documented so you can walk an interviewer through every decision.

IS THIS THE RIGHT TRACK?

Start with digital electronics.

Review combinational and sequential logic and basic timing concepts. Familiarity with Linux and scripting helps; TCL scripting is part of the published course scope.

Who is this course for?

  • ECE, EEE and related engineering students and graduates.
  • Engineers moving towards physical design and timing roles.
  • Learners preparing to discuss implementation flows in technical interviews.
